Jeevika trust - village livelihood in India
Expressions of vision for an India without poverty, rural Tamil Nadu – March 2005

Government can’t, corporations won’t… so who will... tackle rural poverty?  NGOs, like Jeevika, need to take the lead.

The Jeevika mission

Jeevika Trust believes there is a real dynamic between our vision, mission and values.

A Vision is a dream, written in the sky, which hopefully others will share and which is always there to give us hope and direction:

An India without absolute poverty where all people have the opportunity to live with dignity, free from hunger, deprivation and marginalisation.

Our Mission is central, it expresses our particular journey towards that vision, giving us energy and confidence in:

Tackling the roots of poverty in India through:

  • Revitalizing rural communities
  • Promoting inclusive, harmonious sustainable development
  • Creating and sharing appropriate knowledge

We have inherited strong ethical and spiritual Values from Fritz Schumacher and those who worked with him which we believe should be worn on our sleeve:

We believe in Head, Heart and Hands.  We find our energy in Sambedana (compassion), Sewa (service) and Sangha (co-operation).
