A DOLLAR A DAY – RELATIVE VALUES
For some, a dollar a day means the world. For others it is nothing.
About a dollar a day is the official ‘poverty line’ in India – there are 370 million people who are born, live and die below that line.
For a marginalised village family in India, one dollar a day – say 45 Rupees - can buy enough to survive another day – lentils, salt, rice, oil, greens. But not enough to offer safe water, health, literacy, choice, opportunity and hope. But another dollar a day can start to make a difference.
For a middle class family in Dellhi or Bangalore, 45 Rupees will buy an extra litre of petrol for the car, a snack, a cosmetic item – not a life-or-death choice. In a large hotel, 45 rupees may go as a tip to a waiter or porter. It’s a small decision, a choice, made at least once a day
For a middle-class family in Europe, one dollar – say one Euro, or 50 Pence – is nothing. How many times a day, a week, a month, do we make a ‘FIFTY PENCE DECISION’ – find a fifty-pence piece in our pocket or purse and make an impulse-purchase? – an evening paper, some extra fruit, a bar of chocolate? It’s a trivial decision we may make at least two or three times a day.
There is a way to move that dollar, that 50 pence, that 45 rupees, from the person who can easily afford it, to the person who desperately needs it. It is called JEEVIKA TRUST.
Fifty pence a day, or £15 per month, given by you to us, will support our projects in India - delivering access to water, health-care, secure shelter, literacy, training. Helping women to bear their burdens, overcome discrimination, build hope for their children and play a role in the village.
