Friends Fundraising Events

The Anglers Pub, Teddington, England

A huge THANKS must go to The Anglers, Teddington, for organising two great fun days in support of Jeevika Trust!

“The Anglers has long been a hub of the local scene around the Teddington and Hampton Wick area”, says pub manager Sonia Harris: “We are a family pub, with our big garden beside the river, and have found a strong sense of community among our customers, local schools, charities and businesses. We are keen to do what we can to help”.

And help they have!

The Easter Weekend egg-stravaganza helped raise an egg-cellent £563 towards our work in the tsunami-torn southern state of Tamil Nadu.  This family day of fun and fundraising – with live music and Easter egg hunts – was supported by all age groups in the local community from beautiful tsunami- themed table decorations made by children at local St Mary’s & St Peter’s Primary School, to the Anglers Staff donating their wages for the day!

July’s Goats ‘n’ Boats fun day was another bleating success, raising over £1000 towards two of our Projects! I hope all those young and young-at-heart wacky-racers enjoyed it as much as we did!  From goat-petting and egg-and-spoon races to tug-of-war, treasure-hunts, champagne hoopla and ‘guess the goat poo’, this was a family fun day to remember!

The goats (provided by Hounslow Urban Farm in Feltham) helped us launch our project ‘Capricorn’, and the day’s activities raised £700 towards our ‘GIVE A MUM A GOAT!’ scheme.

Overall, The Anglers contributed £875 to Project Pisces – helping us repair and re-float 8 fishing-boats that had been damaged by the tsunami.

The Michelob London Triathlon, 7th August 2005

Our very own Admin Officer, Barbara, and her friend Ian Gamble joined in the latest number one sport to take on the challenge of the Michelob Olympic Distance Triathlon – that is as daunting as it sounds!  This multi-disciplinary event is great for both the spectators and the competitors, showing a wide range of talents from first-timers to international professionals (the elites).  The course is split into three phases: 1.5km swim in wetsuits in the Thames; a flying 40km cycle (clocking up to 60km per hour!) through London with circuits going as far as Westminster; and last but never least the 10km run – that saps the end of your reserves…

“Even after months of preparation, I had no idea what to expect in the swim… putting on my shared & already wet wetsuit, goggles first, then official white swim hat, I blended into the crowd as never before!  We were a sea of seals – totalling 300…. we set off – a seething mass of flailing legs… with people kicking in my face and trying to crawl over me – this was a bid for survival!” (Barbara de Moubray)

Both our competitors did fantastically well to complete the course in great times.  Special mention must be given to Ian, who with a fabulous start under his belt – 3rd out of the water in his ’wave’ –had a puncture and fell off his bike, but got on the bike again to finish 11th, having finished in 2hours 25minutes.  Only later did he realise that he had actually broken his finger – ouch!

Their sweaty efforts gave a great kick-start for Jeevika Trust’s Project Capricorn, raising £1,300!

French Alps Fundraising @ Le Bar National, St Jean d’Aulps

A big MERCI BEAUCOUP! is in order for Selena de Moubray and her merry entourage at Le Bar National for organizing an incredibly successful fundraising event on 26 January this year… The evening heated up with a flaming BBQ, live music, and bar games – including the popular pizza-eating competitions!  But the real frenzy started with the Auction of promises –items were donated from the local community, and included balloon rides, locally crafted sculptures, Board/ski equipment, and even a holiday in Malawi! - That really had the heat soaring! By the end of the night they had raised a sizzling £8,700!! Well-done!

Thanks to this effort, we were able to send a much-needed Mobile Hospital unit to Tamil Nadu, southern India in the wake of the devastation of the tsunami.   Over three months 12,000 people were treated by the mobile team. The rest of the money enabled us to re-float an amazing 53 boats, thereby benefiting over 300 fishermen to regain their livelihoods.

“I just knew I wanted to do something to help the desperate situation left by the tsunami.  But I wanted to know where this money was going – not just into some huge pot!  Supporting Jeevika Trust meant that I received feedback direct from India.  It was really tangible – that we had really helped make a difference. And now we have photos on the wall of some boats bearing our name!”

Souper lunch raises the stakes! Aubignan, Provence, France

It was an auspiciously hot and sunny day, despite being mid-January!  40 people turned out for the soup and cheese fundraiser in the garden of a Provencal farm house, in Aubignan. Whilst the wine flowed & the soup was slurped, raffle prizes were snapped up.  With no time for siestas that day, the real excitement came with the auction of promises. Wonderful prizes included paintings and even a country cottage holiday by the river in Kent… for those needing to get away to the cooler climes of England!

We must raise our glasses to give ‘compliments to the chef!’ – Danielle de Moubray.  The soup must have been exceedingly good as they raised £1,282 through their fantastic efforts!  So indeed a huge THANK YOU is in order for Danielle de Moubray & friends for conjuring up such a delicious occasion and who have now helped Jeevika Trust re-float 11 fishing-boats devastated by the tsunami, thereby supporting 66 fishermen and their families!
