These short sequences of film, shot in March 2006, will give you a feel for four very different parts of India where Jeevika Trust and its Delhi-based partner Schumacher Centre for Development have been working.
They range from the Coromandel Coast of Tamil Nadu in the far south of India where the tsunami of December 2004 devastated coastal villages like Karaikal, through the eastern state of Orissa and the central area of Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, up to the far northern state of Uttaranchal (now Uttarakhand).
They show how fishing livelihoods for up to 3,000 villagers were re-established by repair of fishing boats after the tsunami, how marginalised village women in forest areas of Orissa were helped to make better money from bamboo craft, how women in Mathura and Utraakhand started to generate income from goat-rearing and bee-keeping.
Further filming is planned for September 2008 and we expect the results to be available on this site shortly thereafter. So WATCH THIS SPACE !
We are very grateful to Jamie Lowe from Kinokast for generously donating his filming and editing skills and his time to us, and to Sophie Brooks for recording the narrative.
