Schumacher Centre for Development, Delhi
Schumacher Centre for Development (SCD), based in Safdarjung Enclave of Delhi, is Jeevika Trust’s main partner in India.
SCD was set up in 2001 on the initiative of Jeevika Trust, to work for co-operation and a focused approach amongst development agencies in India, in order to deliver maximum help to our beneficiaries.
SCD’s main agenda includes:
- Generating, planning and delivering rural development projects in several areas of India
- Acting as a Resource Centre for NGOs of all sizes and other important stakeholders
- Working as a forum for interchange of effective ideas and thinking in rural development
- Inviting contributions and stimulating informed participation
- Monitoring trends and new ideas in appropriate technology and rural problems
- Sharing knowledge and experience through lectures, roundtables and newsletters
- Working with others to identify and formulate sustainable, communicable, reproducible models for development which can be pursued or implemented all round India
SCD under its Director, Dr D.K. Giri, works in continuous liaison with Jeevika Trust’s UK team; together we have taken big strides since 2004 to widen our horizons beyond our original base in Lucknow, to reach village communities in the far north, the centre, the east and the far south of the country. For more information on these please see our Jeevika Review 2006-2008.
SCD has also developed a Resource Centre for civil society through which it has created a powerful, influential and effective programme of seminars and workshops to pool experience between grass-roots NGOs and to engage representatives from business and the media. The Resource Centre has also developed programmes for direct training of village communities in village democracy, health awareness and gender issues; this training has been delivered in Uttar Pradesh, Orissa and elsewhere in collaboration with partners such as Times of India Foundation, Westminster Foundation, CARE India and others.
